A History of Les Deux Alpes Summer Ski
The ski resort of Les Deux Alpes was formed back in the 1940’s, with a lot of development in the 1970’s meaning that some of the current buildings were in need of a revamp. Les Deux Alpes has recently been under a redevelopment plan with much of the resort being modernised. During this redevelopment, the tourist office has maintained a tasteful standard all around. Various new high class accommodation has been built including Le Cortina and Alba. Summer skiing is done in the morning until lunchtime leaving the rest of the day for more traditional summer activities in Les Deux Alpes.
Location and Glacier Information
Les Deux Alpes lies between Grenoble and Briancon in the Oisans area of the French Alps. Due to the fantastic location and easy access, you can be from Grenoble airport to the ski slopes in less than 1hr 30 mins. The Oisans area is also famous for Alpe d’Huez and Vaujany (forming the Grandes Rousses ski area).
The Glacier for summer skiing is usually open from mid-June to the end of August. Les Deux Alpes summer ski normally starts around 7am until just after midday, everyday. The Glacier opens for skiing on a week earlier than stated, however, the first week is only accessible to registered Ski Clubs.
The Glacier offers 90 skiable hectares and 11 runs. Four blue, two green and two red runs make up the skiing on offer. Les Deux Alpes offers a good number of ski lifts. There are two chair lifts, seven ski lifts, two gondolas, one funicular, two rope tows and a cable car.
A large, well-renowned snow park with two half-pipes, hips quarters, boarder-cross, grind bars and jump modules is available. The snow park often has plus music to set the tone and barbecues. Set in a relaxed summer atmosphere, Les Deux Alpes summer ski is for everyone from complete beginners to more intermediate and expert skiers/boarders, looking to enjoy something different. You may even spot someone famous (if you are up-to-date with your ski knowledge) as professionals even come along during the summer months to perfect techniques.
